San Francisco and Marseille, March 28. Unistellar, the company behind the revolutionary, consumer eVscope, announced today that it has successfully raised €2.1 million in seed financing. Brighteye Ventures, Europe’s leading EdTech-focused venture capital fund, participated in this investment round along several angel investors, each of whom brings important, high-profile experience to the company.
Created in June 2015, Unistellar is the start-up that makes a uniquely powerful and compact consumer telescope, the first of its kind able to reveal galaxies, nebulae, comets, and much more, in unparalleled crisp and colorful detail. This smart, easy-to-use device also allows anyone to contribute to cutting-edge science while observing the wonders of the Universe.
“With Unistellar’s production lines gearing up to deliver their first eVscopes in June, we’re closer than ever to our goal of democratizing astronomy. The time was right to invite investors to join us,” explained Laurent Marfisi, Unistellar’s CEO. “This €2.1 million round of financing is aimed at accelerating the eVscopes’ commercialization. We’re also excited to welcome investors with diverse profiles. The ones joining us in this round come from France, Switzerland, Spain, and the United States, and their backgrounds range from hardware and B2C entrepreneurship, to B2B and technology, education, astronomy, and venture capital.”
“The Unistellar’s eVscope gives an extraordinary, dynamic experience that delights astronomy buffs and casual fans alike” said Benoit Wirz, partner at Brighteye. “We are delighted to be backing an incredible team whose unique product will inspire a new generation to learn about stars.”
Prior to today’s announcement, Unistellar, a fourteen-person company with offices in Marseille and San Francisco, had already raised more than €2.7 million ($3.1 million) through crowdfunding, with more than 2,000 Unistellar eVscopes pre-ordered.
